You know, entrepreneurship is such an amazing tool for self-discovery.
You learn a lot about yourself, for example, what your strengths and weaknesses are.
But more importantly, you learn how to overcome your weaknesses.
Maybe it’s through hiring staff that specialize in the area you suck at…
Maybe it’s through outsourcing some work to other agencies!
Regardless of what your strengths or weaknesses are, there’s one thing you need to overcome on your own as the CEO of a company.
And that is the fear of sales.
I hear all the time, “I’m just not good at sales.” which in my opinion is such a silly thing to say.
Because what you’re really saying is that you don’t know how to build relationships with people.
That’s all sales is…building trust through a relationship.
Sure, there are various methods to do this, but that’s the outcome of them all.
If you don’t know how to do that, well how are you going to go anywhere meaningful in life?
How are you going to ever go on a date?
I use this analogy all the time about how sales is like dating.
Let me give you some examples…
When it comes to prospecting, I’ve personally found that for every 300 leads I get, I can usually get 3 clients out of that.
That’s a 1% conversion.
If you’re in your mid-twenties like me, you know that when it comes to dating, the chances of finding someone who is everything you desire aren’t that high…
So that conversion rate is about the same, go on 100 dates, probably only one or two of those people will truly be someone you are REALLY into.
Unless your only standards are that they’re breathing.
Sales always has been and always will be a numbers game.
Same goes for dating?
Want more clients? Do more prospecting.
Want more dates? Talk to more people.
So, dating and sales are similar in that they both are for sure numbers games…the more you play, the more you win.
Another example that shows how similar these two are, is desperateness.
Businesses and people you’re dating, can both tell when you’re desperate.
Let me tell you, it’s not an attractive trait to have.
Even if you have 0 clients or 0 girl/boyfriends…act like you’ve got 10 lined up.
Why? It’s simple psychology, people want what other people approve, this is called social proof.
If 10 other people want to do business with you/go on a date with you, you must be an interesting and valuable person who is worth the time invested.
There’s another way that they’re related that’s not so fun to talk about…
You’re going to get broken up with.
Yes, you’re going to get dumped and fired. The crazy part is that this will happen even if you’re doing EVERYTHING right.
It won’t happen all the time, but it for sure will happen, so just be prepared.
Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
